Meditation in Addiction Recovery

Meditation need not be a mysterious thing reserved for the holy. Meditation is for the common man. Step eleven speaks about meditation, and it is an essential teaching in most all major religions. The forms of meditation are many and include:

  • Being still
  • Walking
  • Dancing
  • Art
  • Breathing
  • Awareness
  • Concentration

How do we use Meditation in Addiction Recovery at Arrowhead Lodge?

Meditation training starts with breathing exercises and builds from there. Meditation can done be in a group or solo. It may include music or not and is practiced indoors and out.

Some of the benefits of meditation include:

  • Tranquility
  • Improved physiological functions
  • Better concentration
  • Decrease in symptoms of depression
  • Reduction in anxiety symptoms
  • Relapse prevention
  • Better coping skills

As an Arrowhead Lodge Recovery client you will learn how to meditate in a style that works for you. You will find that meditation brings a deep sense of calm and serenity and therefore offer a lasting and effective solution for one’s life stressors.

Meditation and Alcoholics Anonymous

The 11th step of twelve step programs specifically refers to “prayer and meditation” as a way to improve one’s awareness of the Divine. The benefits are many for only 5 minutes or more of practice a day.

Mindfulness Meditation Training

Mindfulness is a popular word today; however, it is an ancient practice that has many beneficial effects for overall health and wellbeing. Please see Dr. Chance’s blog article: “Mindfulness in Addiction Treatment” for more information on the benefits of mindfulness in treating addiction.

Simply stated, mindfulness training begins with being aware of what’s going on in the present moment and by being aware, having better control of one’s thoughts and actions.
